Rooted in the Greek letter "Upsilon', the gallery symbolizes a reverence for history and depth, reflecting the founder Marcelo Zimmler's background in mathematics and engineering. Launched in 2014, the global gallery is dedicated to the nuanced exploration of the underlying principles of abstract art.

Since its founding, Upsilon has strived and succeeded at offering a distinct point of view, one that is informed not by the whims of the market but by the rigors of scholarship and the drive to innovate. Specializing in international Postwar and Contemporary art, the gallery's mission is to feature a diverse range of profound perspectives and approaches, with a focus on rediscovering overlooked artists within a broader historical context.

Today, Upsilon has two main locations in New York, at 23 East 67th Street, and in London, at 64 Grosvenor Street, Mayfair, which accommodates 6-8 shows annually. Upsilon Milan will open this October, the gallery's third main exhibition space.  The gallery also holds a private “by appointment only” office located at 146 West 57th Street, which is centered around the gallery’s established fine print publishing program.
