Uwe Kowski (b.1963) is a painter whose work transforms imagery and symbols drawn from everyday life into vibrant abstract compositions. Examining his interactions with the world around him, Kowski approaches painting instinctively, employing a broad and often highly saturated palette that frees him from the imperative to represent the visible world directly.

His compositions are built through layers of colour, line, gesture, text, and mark-making, where signs and fragments of language emerge and dissolve within densely worked surfaces. What initially appears spontaneous or excessive gradually reveals itself as a carefully orchestrated structure, balancing immediacy with formal precision.

Kowski’s works have been shown in numerous national and international solo and group exhibitions, including at Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden; Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig, Leipzig; Kunstmuseum Bochum, Bochum; Kunsthalle Rostock, Rostock; Kunsthalle Emden, Emden; G2 Kunsthalle, Leipzig; Seongnam Arts Center, Seongnam; and Ruiz-Healy Art, San Antonio. His work is held in major public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum der Bildenden Künste Leipzig, Leipzig; Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Dresden; Museum Junge Kunst, Frankfurt (Oder); and Kunsthalle Rostock, Rostock.

Born in Leipzig in 1963, Kowski studied painting and graphic arts at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig between 1984 and 1989. He lives and works in Berlin.
