In the tradition of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field, Alice Baber created paintings which dissolve into light and color. In this composition, pastel colors bleed into white intervals of light, overlapping and interacting with one another in soft hues of yellow, orange, pink, blue, and violet. The drifting shapes appear to travel with aqueous softness. Their diffuse edges meet in a stream of light whose motion is implied through subtle gradations of tone and hue. Yellow shapes emit an aureate glow, while rosy stains tint the canvas with the gentle warmth of dawn. Baber often employed titles referencing motion to emphasize the dynamic energy within her work. Here, the title evokes a sense of ascent—a ladder toward a serene peak—while the composition itself pulses with a bubbling, upward rhythm, as if carried by light itself.
