My paintings take particular inspiration from illuminated manuscripts and medieval bestiaries which often feature delicately painted creatures and plants framed by intricate borders and patterns. Often depictions of animals, particularly in Medieval texts, have slightly humanistic qualities. I find this to be particularly common with depictions of lions which often have amusing and  strangely human faces. This phenomenon was primarily due to the fact that the artists depicting these creatures, during the medieval period, often hadn’t ever experienced them in real life. They instead usually copied from other artworks or relied on descriptions that emphasised symbolic or mythical aspects over naturalistic representation.
