This collector’s edition reimagines Dream of the Red Chamber through the intricate structure of accordion–dragon scale binding, transforming a canonical literary work into an immersive sculptural object. As the folios unfold and the layered “scales” are gently lifted, the viewer is gradually drawn into the narrative, encountering the text as a spatial and temporal experience rather than a linear one.

Each folio is constructed around a central “scale” element, meticulously assembled using the traditional dragon scale binding technique. This method, historically described by Song dynasty scholar Zhang Bangji 张邦基 in Mo Zhuang Man Lu 《墨庄漫录》as a format in which “the pages may be turned continuously while the scroll remains intact,” allows the work to maintain both continuity and expansion. The resulting structure evokes the sensation of movement across the surface - often likened to a dragon gliding through layered pages.

Through this work, the book becomes a site of contemplation and interaction, where craftsmanship, literary heritage, and contemporary spatial thinking converge. Every detail invites close attention, offering the viewer an intimate and unfolding encounter with one of China’s most celebrated literary masterpieces.
