Osvaldo Mariscotti revels in visual simplicity, finding beauty in combinations of conventional materials and forms. He often blurs the boundaries between mediums, reimagining and redefining what a painting, sculpture, drawing, print, or installation can be. Over the course of four decades, the artist has been a restless investigator of time and motion, with language playing a central role in his practice.

  • Conceived as an extension of Mariscotti's solo exhibition Kaleidoscope at Upsilon's 23 East 67th Street Gallery, this focused online presentation spotlights seven new paintings that incorporate the artist's signature elements of repetition and informal abstraction.

  • Osvaldo Mariscotti, Four Seasons, 2022, oil on canvas (4 panels), overall: 48" x 96" (121.9 cm x 243.8 cm)
  • Mariscotti's method at first seems arbitrary, with chance playing a major role in the paintings, but, with closer examination, reveal a methodical if not mathematical precision, referencing models of conceptual allusion and illusion.

"Hard-edge is just as important as gestural in my body of work, as on a personal level, they complement each other and allow me to achieve equilibrium. I like to think of my work as highly emotional, and so, each line and color is meant to evoke something different in the viewer."

    Osvaldo Mariscotti, Season III, 2022, oil on canvas, 18" x 24" (45.7 cm x 61.0 cm)

"Sometimes I question, and worry, when an artist becomes repetitive and too transcriptional. Although, then again, that's what I like about Warhol with his Marilyns and soup cans, and Lowry with his matchstick men. To me, repetitiveness means an artist knows exactly what he's looking for, and he finds it, and re-finds it, over, and over, and over again."
