Discussion with Robert Mattison and Alex Grimley

On Francine Tint: In Dialogue with Helen Frankenthaler

Step into the exclusive back room of Upsilon New York Gallery, where you'll find two literary heavyweights swapping insights on Francine Tint: In Dialogue with Helen Frankenthaler. It’s not every day you get a front-row seat to genius in conversation—unless you’re here, of course.

Robert S. Mattison, the Marshall R. Metzgar Professor of Art History at Lafayette College, is a veritable titan in the world of modern and contemporary art. Armed with degrees from Middlebury, Williams, and Princeton, Mattison has penned four books, curated over thirty exhibitions, and produced more than sixty articles. His scholarly gaze hones in on American abstract expressionism, making him an authoritative voice on artists like Franz Kline and Robert Rauschenberg.

Alex Grimley, meanwhile, brings his own flair to the art history scene with degrees from Bennington and the University of Texas at Austin, where he’s currently working toward his Ph.D. Grimley's research bridges modern art with experimental music and abstract painting. Having contributed over 30 articles to the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon and written for high-profile galleries, Grimley has also made waves as a sharp art critic in The Brooklyn Rail. Both are exceptional minds shaping how we view the art world—one through extensive curatorial prowess and the other through a cutting-edge interdisciplinary approach.
