In this studio visit, Allison Gildersleeve speaks from her Brooklyn studio about the ideas and impulses that shape her painting practice. She discusses her use of recurring objects, chairs, flowers, scissors, not as illustrative elements but as positional ones: stand-ins for presence, identity, and the people closest to her. Figures are absent from her work by intention; instead, she evokes those she loves through the things that belong to them, placing herself within the painted space by giving herself a seat.
Gathering, her first solo exhibition with Upsilon Gallery, is on view May 7 through June 18, 2026, at 23 E 67th St, New York.
